WWE Raw Results:

The Undisputed Champ is Here

WWE Champion John Cena makes the announcer give him a “proper” entrance announcement. Cena says the Truth is a lie. Cena goes off on the crowd for using their power to save a sideshow hack whose greatest achievement is pretending to be him. The crowd chants that they want R-Truth. Cena tells the crowd they are keyboard activists who have no power to change anything. R-Truth is a gimmick that the people will spit out in a year. The crowd boos as Cena goes into a full-on rant about this being his retirment tour, and he has limited time. We are halfway done with all of Cena’s dates. Cena chastizes the crowd for wasting his time with the class clown. The people need to use their power to send him some real competition.

Cult of Personality blares through the PA system as CM Punk makes his way to the ring. The crowd is deafening with this CM Punk chant. Punk says he has some stuff to get off his chest, and he’s prepared to do it with his fist if he has to. Cena agrees to listen. Punk wants to make it clear he isn’t here to defend the establishment; he’s here to defend the people. The crowd roars as Punk adds that the reason Cena is upset is that the office picked him, but the people never did. Punk isn’t here to kiss the final boss’s ass like Cena, the people are Punk’s boss. It’s Punk’s job to give the people what they want. If the people want the Truth, they are going to get Ron Killings.

Punk is going to teach Cena that he’s just another spoke on the wheel when he takes the WWE Championship from him. The last time they shared the ring, Cena took advantage of Seth Rollins‘ attacking Punk and locked him in the STF. The last thing Punk remembers is Cena apologizing. Punk knows that Cena knows what he’s doing isn’t right. That title has corrupted Cena. It corrupted Punk the last time he had it. When Punk came back to WWE, winning that championship wasn’t on his list of goals. If Punk has to become a monster to save the championship, so be it.

Punk tells Cena that he’ll let Cena pick which one of his final dates Punk will take the championship from him. And if Cena is man enough, he’ll pick tonight. The crowd goes nuts. Cena shockingly agrees to do it, but not tonight. Cena says if Punk wants his title match, it has to be in Saudi Arabia at Night of Champions. Punk nods yes. Seth Rollins’ music hits. Rollins, Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed walk out on the stage. Rollins holds up his newly acquired Money in the Bank briefcase as if to remind Cena he’s lurking.

Grade: A

This was Cena’s best promo since turning heel. Instead of attacking the crowd from the most predictable angles (calling fans fat and stupid, etc.) Cena went after them for being the reason for R-Truth getting to come back and costing him his match at MITB. Cena was on point tonight, and part of this writer wants to see Cena and Punk. Not just because it would be awesome, but because Cena is clearly firing on all cylinders here tonight. At this point, there is not much that can be said about a Punk promo. He’s entered into the Ric Flair/Dusty Rhodes level of promo godhood at this point.

AJ Styles vs. Chad Gable

After some back and forth, Styles sends Gable flying with a dropkick. Gable rolls out. Styles goes out to the apron. After a distraction from the Creeds, Gable trips Styles on the apron. Exploder suplex out on the floor by Gable. After the break, Styles fires up and sets up the Styles Clash. Gable escapes and lands a German suplex. Diving headbutt by Gable. Styles kicks out. After a series of counters, Styles sets up another Styles Clash.

Julius distracts the referee while Brutus pulls Gable out of the ring. Styles takes out both Creeds and calls for the Phenomenal Forearm. While Styles leaps on the top rope, Gable picks Styles’ foot out of the air and locks in the Ankle Lock. Styles tries to roll out of it, but Gable holds on. Styles rolls Gable into the Calf Crusher, but immediately transitions into a Styles Clash for the win!

Winner- AJ Styles

Grade: B-

Solid match. Gable and Styles weren’t exactly moving at full speed here, but these two at half speed are better than 95% of the rest of the roster. This one needed more time, but they made the most of it with what Styles and Gable had. The interference by the Creeds was well done here and led to a few tight nearfalls. Gable’s counter into the ankle lock was executed to perfection, and Styles rolling Gable into the Styles Clash using the Calf Crusher was impressive as hell. Heck of a finish.

In Gorilla, Roxanne Perez tells Liv Morgan they should work together tonight to ensure someone from The Judgement Day advances. Morgan tells Perez to stay out of her way. Perez says may the best woman win. Morgan retorts that she will.

Queen of the Ring Tournament Fatal 4-Way Match: Rhea Ripley vs. Kairi Sane vs. Liv Morgan vs. Roxanne Perez

Ripley goes after Morgan as soon as the bell rings. Perez saves Morgan by nailing Ripley with a flying back elbow. Sane leaps off Ripley’s back and nails Morgan. Ripley nails Sane with a basement dropkick. Sane kicks out. Ripley tries a ripcord suplex. Sane flips out of it and lands a running blockbuster for a near fall. Perez spends all her energy protecting Morgan from Ripley and Sane. Morgan and Perez blast Ripley with a Russian leg sweep/code breaker combo. Perez and Morgan press slam Sane over the top onto Ripley. After the break, Morgan hits a springboard codebreaker on Ripley. Sane breaks up the pin. Sane goes up top. Morgan cuts her off. Perez joins Morgan. Ripley powerbombs Perez and Morgan off the top.

Sane is still on the ropes. Ripley gets to her feet and walks into a leaping elbow strike from Sane. Ripley kicks at two. Sane nails Ripley with a wheelbarrow stunner. Morgan and Perez break up the pin. Perez and Morgan beat down Ripley and Sane. Morgan and Perez high-five. Ripley gets to her feet and lays out Morgan and Perez. Sane eats a superkick from Ripley. Morgan tries Oblivion, but Ripley puts on the brakes. Ripley crushes Morgan with Riptide. As Ripley is pinning Morgan, Raquel Rodriguez appears and pulls Ripley out of the ring. Sane takes out Ripley and Rodriguez with a dive. Sane lands the InSANE Elbow on Morgan. As Sane pins Morgan, Perez rolls in and flips Sane into a pin for the win!

Winner- Roxanne Perez

Grade: C+

This was an okay match in a vacuum, but again, competitors disappearing for minutes at a time for no real reason is the main reason these multi-person matches don’t work.

The Man has Come Around!

The new Women’s Intercontinental Champion, Becky Lynch, asks the crowd where her “you deserve it” chants are. It doesn’t matter because she doesn’t need it. Lynch lists her many accomplishments. Lynch welcomes the IC Championship to relevance. The crowd boos while Lynch complains about not being able to be happy because Lyra Valkyria ruined everything. Lynch goes on and on about Valkyria being a sore sport and claims that Valkyria tried to kill her.

Lynch wants the “bird lady” to come to the ring, apologize, and raise Lynch’s hand the right way. Valkyria walks out on the stage. As Lynch rants about Valkyria being a sore sport. Before Valkyria can get to the ring, Bayley hops the barricade and attacks Lynch from behind. Lynch rolls out of the ring and backs into Valkyria. Valkyria tosses Lynch back into the ring. Bayley tries to hit the Rose Plant, but Lynch escapes. Valkyria looks confused.

Grade: C+

Lynch’s promos are hit or miss at this point. This was a bit of a miss. Lynch and Valkyria need to just keep it to having actual matches. Their promo interplay is always a bit flat. Bayley popping back up is a welcome but expected surprise. At this point, maybe the Role Model’s presence will make this Lynch/Valkyria feud more interesting.

The Truth is

A masked figure hops over the barricade and stands on the commentary desk. The person removes their mask, and it’s R-Truth! The crowd goes insane. Truth tells the crowd not to let anyone tell them they don’t matter. Don’t let anyone tell them that they don’t have power. Truth is back because of the WWE Universe. They wanted R-Truth back, and they won. Truth is back for the WWE Universe, but he’s also back for himself.

Not only did they bring Truth back, they got him. We all love R-Truth, but R-Truth can be too fun, too nice, and too forgiving. Not him. He feels different; he feels alive. For whoever thinks he’s a sideshow act or a gimmick… Truth pulls out a pair of scissors and cuts off his signature hair. After picking up his hair, he proclaims that the Truth has set him free. He is Ron Killings. He is the Truth, the whole Truth, and put some respect on his name. The crowd pops.

Grade: B+

Hell of a promo by Truth, or I should say Ron Killings. The crowd will literally eat anything Killings serves up at this point, and giving him this promo spot is a sign that WWE plans to take advantage of it. Seeing Killings cut his hair truly signifies the end of R-Truth and the rebirth of Ron “The Truth” Killings.

King of the Ring Tournament Fatal 4-Way Match: Sami Zayn vs. Penta vs. Bron Breakker vs. Dominik Mysterio

Penta lands a dive that takes out Dominik. Breakker suplexes Zayn all over the ring. Penta tries a springboard and gets caught by Breakker. Breakker slams Penta. Dominik gets turned inside out by a Steiner-line from Breakker. Penta, Zayn, and Dominik triple-team Breakker and toss him out. Zayn lands a tornado DDT on Penta. Dominik breaks up the pin. Zayn lands an Arabian press on Breakker out on the floor. Penta takes out Zayn with a dive to the floor. Dominik dives through the ropes and blasts Penta with a tornado DDT. Dominik turns around, and Breakker dives off the apron and sends Dominik careening over the commentary desk with a lariat. After the break, Penta pulls Dominik off the top with a running Liger Bomb. Zayn is still up top.

Breakker sends Zayn flying with a BreakinSteiner. Penta counters a power slam by Breakker with a DDT. Dominik pushes Penta out of the ring and tries to steal the pin. Breakker kicks out. Zayn eventually lands a blue thunder bomb on Dominik. Dominik kicks out. Penta breaks up the Helluva Kick from Zayn. Penta snaps Zayn’s arm with the sacrifice. Zayn gets to his feet and eats a Penta Driver. Dominik breaks up the pin. Mexican Destroyer by Penta. Breakker breaks up the pin. Penta rolls out. Breakker destroys Penta with a super Spear out on the floor. LA Knight appears and drops Breakker with a BFT. Knight escapes through the crowd. Back in the ring. Zayn Helluva Kicks Dominik’s head off for the win.

Winner- Sami Zayn

Grade: B

This one started and finished at a breakneck pace that was hard to keep up with. So many big moves and extremely close near falls. Zayn had to win this, and it’s nice to see that he managed to come out on top. This writer thinks Zayn is winning the King of the Ring and will face Jey Uso at SummerSlam. LA Knight appeared and got a measure of revenge, which was the cherry on top. Knight needs a feud with a top guy.

Nikki Bella Returns

Bella is here to talk about Evolution 2, which returns next month. Bella puts over the talent in the locker room while mispronouncing Stephanie Vaquer’s name. Liv Morgan storms down to the ring and yells at Bella for not mentioning her name, specifically when talking about all of the talent in the locker room. Morgan screams in Bella’s face about all of her accomplishments.

Morgan tells Bella that she’s jealous of her because she has everything Bella wants. She has respect, a championship, and a man. Bella says she understands that Morgan is having a bad night. Bella wants to know if Morgan’s man belongs to her or Roxanne Perez. Morgan tells Bella that she’s a champion, while Bella will always just be a reality TV Diva. Bella starts to come back into the ring, and Morgan surprises her with Oblivion.

Grade: B-

This started the same way every terrible Bella promo has… but things turned quickly once Liv Morgan stormed her way to the ring and channeled her inner Stephanie McMahon. Has Morgan always screeched like that? Anyway, the back-and-forth quips here were brutal and saved a so-so affair from being flat-out boring.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Jey Uso (c) vs. Gunther

Gunther takes Jey over with a headlock. Jey slips out and traps Gunther in a rear naked choke. Gunther drives Jey into the corner. Jey traps Gunther in the choke again. Gunther gets to the ropes and rolls out. After the break, Gunther is working over Jey’s injured ribs. Gunther rips off Jey’s shirt to reveal that Jey’s ribs are taped. Gunther lays in a few elbows, but Jey manages to counter with a choke of his own. Gunther counters with a few more elbows and another choke. Jey passes out.

Winner and NEW World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther!

Grade: B

This match was ten times better than their match at WrestleMania. It was less about making Jey and more about making both men. Jey fought valiantly in a loss. This match wasn’t a superkick party. It was two skilled in-ring competitors attempting to out-wrestle each other. At this point, no one should question Jey’s in-ring skills.

WWE Raw Review

This episode of WWE Raw was a step in the right direction compared to the quite frankly boring episodes we have been subjected to leading up to the Money in the Bank PLE. The show kicked off with the promo of the night when WWE Champion John Cena and Voice of the Voiceless CM Punk finally went face-to-face after a long-simmering issue stemming from WWE Elimination Chamber.

The idea of Punk and Cena running it back one last time is tantalizing enough on paper, but watching them tear into each other tonight makes the idea of a long-term feud even more intriguing. Ron Killings made his re-debut and made a statement on what to expect from what may be his final run in WWE. For the first time in weeks, this writer is excited about next week’s episode of Raw. Will WWE build on this shocking positive momentum? Let us know what you think in the comments!
